Coming right to your school or other local venue, Family Science Night presents hands-on science related activities for parents and children to enjoy together!

Research shows that student test scores and enjoyment of learning dramatically increases with parent participation. Family Science Night involves and engages parents and their children by providing:

  • Opportunities for parents and students to be partners in learning;
  • Informal learning activities that supplement the child’s school experience;
  • Activities that use inexpensive and readily available materials;
  • Opportunities to find “science” in real world activities;
  • Cooperative learning projects that develop problem solving, questioning, and communication skills;
  • Meaningful science study opportunities using many commonly found, everyday materials; and
  • Involvement in the scientific process – making predictions, collecting and evaluating data, modifying the original experiment, and trying again.
  • Program Specifics

  • Our program is designed for grades 2-6 at your school. Activities focus on motion/physics, air, physical senses, animals/botany/biology, chemistry, electricity and magnetism, optical illusions, optics, and sound. Activities may change on a regular basis as we create new ones.
  • The program is offered in the evening allowing from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.  Spaces are limited so please contact us ASAP for available dates.  For information and reservations contact us at fsn@discoverycntr.org.
  • To download an application, click here. For a list of FSN Activities, click here.
  • Adult volunteers are required: A minimum of 25 teachers and parents.
  • Participation is limited to the maximum number of people permitted in the school multi-purpose room.
  • Testimonials

    Melanie Rosenthal, VP of Enrichment
    This was such a fantastic night. Seeing all of the kids excited about science was wonderful. My favorite part of the night was when a first-grader left and he said, “thank you, this was awesome!” Thanks, Discovery Center, for an enriching night.
    David Endelman, GIS Coordinator
    Better than a video game! There’s applied curiosity and interaction which equals science! Not a cell phone or a video game in sight! There is real focus, challenge, discovery … and new beginning!
    Fircoz Pethan
    Great to do the hands-on experiments. My son is very excited doing all of the activities. I’m overwhelmed by the turnout!
    Monica Stoffer
    Cool to have hands-on experience to get science in a different way
    A busy father
    Enthusiasm for activities is great. Already lost my son three times. I’m trying to keep up with him. To see is to believe!
    Gail Small, author: Joyful Learning
    It’s hard to imagine who was having the most fun, students of all ages, parents, or the young science guides! This is a see to believe, wide-eyed, late night and students are fascinated to absorb as much as science will teach them. This is joyful learning in action!
    A mom
    Future scientists of America … this is a beginning!
    A dad
    No time to eat on a night like this – time to see, touch, learn and discover!.
