Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Discovery Center?
The Discovery Center for Science and Technology
is an educational non-profit organization whose mission is to create
excitement about learning science in an environment that promotes
curiosity, exploration, discovery and creativity. Currently,
we operate as a Museum Without Walls, providing programs at schools
and community venues. The Discovery Center's programs and activities
help people of all ages to understand more about themselves and
their world, and to think critically and creatively about relevant
issues, such as the environment.
The Dream
The dream is to build a permanent home for the Discovery Center that
will be a resource for the entire region
What ages will enjoy the Discovery Center?
Exhibits and programs will be designed
for learners from 2-102. School age children
will be a major audience, but there will be a special area for
the very young. The Verizon Clubhouse is being designed for
teens. Children, teens, and adults, including
seniors, will enjoy exhibits, demonstrations and special programs
designed for their needs and interests.
Where will it be?
The City of Thousand Oaks has designated space for
the Center adjacent to the Civic Arts Plaza and next to The Lakes
project in the center of Thousand Oaks. The current plan would place
the museum on top of a two story parking structure that would bring
the museum up to the current level of the Fred Kavli Theater (the large
theater).
How will the museum be funded?
Funding will be sought from government
agencies at all levels. In addition,we
will seek funding from the corporate and private sectors. Naming
opportunities will be offered for gifts of significant proportion.
Memberships, entrance fees, revenues from facility rental fees
and other museum-run businesses will be directed toward operation
of the center.
Why build it?
This country needs scientists and technologically
savvy citizens. Our economic and political future rests on maintaining
our leadership position in the global economy. However, the number
of students entering these fields has dwindled. Our leading
science oriented businesses report that they are unable
to hire American workers for many of the positions they seek
to fill. This must change. The way to inspire our children to
go into scientific fields is to excite them about learning science
at an early age. In addition, The Discovery Center will boost
the local economy by creating jobs and producing increased sales
tax revenue based on tourist destination. The Discovery
Center will be a destination for school field trips, provide
teacher training and give families the opportunity to spend time
having fun while learning together.
